Back in 1881, Thomas Alva Edison presented his electric light bulb at the International Exhibition of Electricity. His discovery revolutionised the energy market and elevated him to the status of an "international symbol of modernity and scientific social progress". This famous invention marked the beginning of a magnificent industrial adventure in which Enertopia participates by forging alliances with major players in the sector.
The history of petrochemicals goes back as far as the history of oil. In 1859, the American Edwin L.Drake succeeded for the first time in extracting oil from a bore hole of approximately 20 metres deep. Then, in 1886, the chemist Herman Frasch discovered a way to eliminate the sulphur in kerosene, but it was not until the 1920s that "chemical" products were widely used in the manufacture of goods. Enertopia's presence in this sector supports the continuing development of this activity.
Historically associated with river transport, the course of the transport industry was changed forever by the arrival of the first steam locomotive, built by Richard Trevithick and brought into service for the first time in 1804. Electric motors and electric traction made their first appearance around 1900 and are still used today. These inventions led to a real economic boom and were catalysts for the Industrial Revolution. Enertopia is active in all transport technology sectors, including rail and air transport.
In the 1950s, the USA and the USSR engaged in a bitter struggle for the conquest of the last unexplored territory: Space. In 1957, the USSR launched the first satellite - Sputnik - designed by the engineer Sergueï Korolev, and which rotated around the Earth in approximately 98 minutes. Then, on 20th July 1969, we witnessed the first steps of Man on the Moon, made by Neil Amstrong, the commander of the Apollo 11 mission. There remains so much more to achieve in this field and Enertopia will be there to lend its support to the major space projects of tomorrow!
Nanotechnologies and nanosciences emerged In the 1980s, thanks notably to the creation of two ground-breaking instruments: the first tunnel-effect microscope (the SMT), created by IBM in 1981, followed by the atomic force microscope (AFM). These inventions led to the creation of fullerenes in 1986 and nanotubes a few years later. Today, these sciences are still in their infancy and Enertopia is already present to make sure that it misses none of the technological revolution to come.
